Paint Creek Nordic Ski Trails
FAQs
-
Friends of Shoshone Trails is a 501(c)(3) non-profit, based in Cody, WY, formed to develop, maintain, and promote multiple use trails in the Shoshone National Forest’s “front country”, i.e. those portions of the mountains and forested foothills within a thirty minute drive of Cody, or 45 minutes from Powell.
-
Paint Creek Nordic Ski Trails are a newly-permitted multi-use winter trail system off the Chief Joseph Highway, near the top of Dead Indian Hill, along a forest road many call “Henry’s Mill Road”. FOST is specially authorized by the United States Forest Service to groom for cross country skiing, biking, snowshoeing, etc. approximately 4.5 miles of existing roadbeds.
-
FOST trails will be groomed December - March each year, as snow conditions allow.
-
Yes. Skate skiing, classic skiing, alpine touring, bicycling, snowshoeing, hiking, sledding, among other uses, are allowed on Paint Creek Nordic Ski Trails.
-
As of December 9, 2025, there is generally less than 6 inches of snow covering the trail system, with occasional rocks and bare spots exposed. It is generally unsuitable for skate and classic skiing right now unless you have a pair of rock skis, or use alpine-touring (backcountry) skis with skins, and don’t remove them, to protect your bases. No grooming has occured yet, and because of the dry fall, and lack of base-building events, expect it to take several more weeks to build a groomable snowpack.
